Social Networking Security
Today, we talk about security of social network sites. Normally, we must encrypt the data before we upload that data into internet or social network sites. Encryption will protect ours information but no one cannot guarantee that ours data will be 100%. The best way to protect our privacy is checking information by yourself. Everyone must try to change password and checking for the spam or hackers that want to hack into our data. Even though, there are tools that use to protect our data but they were broken by hacker such as OTP(One Time Pad) that use to encrypt password before sending data.
Online banking is the most important activity that people usually do without carefulness. Users always login with unsecure wifi and do the banking online. Most of users don’t know that their information can be fetched in the air. The case is very dangerous because there are a lot of information like password for bank account, name and surname, account number and amount of money. There are many crimes that hook to our information and use in fake way such as, fake e-mail that send to friend list and ask friend to send the important information back.
Overview of Online Social Networking
Online Social Networking is the way to communication with common friends by comment, chat and share. There are big service of online social networking such as, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn. There are different key features that make theses social network sites become popular. Facebook allow users to create their own page of data. When users post of share, that information will become users’. LinkedIn allow users to share their ideas and information that they find themselves; we can call LinkedIn to professional sharing place. Big services are very powerful because of their members or users. They can do thing even it’s very big in short time because number of users. For example, if there are virus that in Facebook, there are many users that will be crash with this virus and it can spread around the world in short of time.
Benefit of Online Social Networking
• Market product: there are many users that use the OSN so; this’s a good way to promote the goods or service. The sellers can analyze the users’ behavior before launched new product by using OSN.
• Buyer: the customer for this huge market are OSN’s users so, the customer will have high opportunity to choose the best product or service. Another thing that good for buyers is convenient. Users can purchase the product or service online.
• Communication with other: OSN’s users can communicate with their friend easily and don’t need to worry about the price for long distant friends.
However, there is some weakness of OSN which is security.
Threats and Attack
There are many attackers that want to access users’ information such as;
- Malware Distribution: this program will be on e-mail or websites that leaks into users’ computer and users don’t know such as, there are malware on funny video that popular at this time. This video was re uploaded and attached malware also. Users will be attacked by malware when play this video. This case is call ‘Koobface’ that happen in the real world.
- Harassment: this threat will be stole user’s picture and create new picture about sex or nude picture about user. There is teenager suicide when she was in case of harassment. In this case; harassment, it’s will be start with user trust each other. They believe that they know each other for a lot time and can rely on them. In the other hand, there is nothing that they know and it end up with user was deceived to do harassment things.
- Hoaxes: similar to bot or virus. It used to fake account or create chain letter.
- 3rd party: such as game, quiz or cute stuff that ask user to allow them to access users’ information
- Shelf life: users never delete their information on server although they delete it out form profile page or account. This information still in server and can trace back for the whole life. For example, Twitter put all information into information congress so, users cannot delete or doing anything with their information.
- URL Shortener: users cannot see the real url link. It can be malware or bot that will leak into computer when click it or link it.
There are many case studied about OSN information privacy. For example, there is the man who were having his holidays on Hawaii and the thief see his information after he checked-in. After that, the thief go to his house with information on map and can steal his house. Next example is our information can sell of advertising. In facebook terms condition shows it and that not illegal because users must accept before create account.
In Organization, they not allow their employee to use Facebook in work hours because it can destroy company’s reputation such as, employee post the bad thing with their manager or say that he will go to another company that give him higher salary. The one way that will have bad effect to organization is angry citizens. This group of people will try to destroy the company and not care about the truth.
Defense
Individual
- Users need to change password and password should be unique
- Not use birthdate to be your password
- Set privacy ‘Friend only’ to allow other people to see your profile information
- Be careful 3rd party
- Have kids’ privacy. There are no taking picture of video with kids without permission
- Set your browser to protect phishing that will fetch your cookies form your computer
- Web trust, think before click
- Prevent URL shortener in your websites
Organization
- Keep tracking with employee’s behavior
- See the attack news that destroying company’s reputation
- Find tool that use to protect organization’s network
These all about lecture 10 that I have studied. I think this lecture will be useful for normal users that rarely concerns about the privacy which is the most important part in online social networking. I hope my summary can help the beginner of using social network aware themselves.
