Social Network Sites
For this class, graduate students com in front the class and talked about social network sites. They have read this paper from jcmc.indiana.edu/vol13/issue1/boyd.ellison.html. They separate the content into 3 parts which are definition, history and scholarship. Every part of presentation can be understand easily and we can ask them as much as we can. I think, this way is the good one for our study because it make the class feel like tutoring session more than the lecture.
This picture shows the presentation in our class. The graduated student stand in front of the class and undergraduate student sit to attend their presentation.
Our lecturer will always give a good advice to us when the presentation run to the important topic.
This topic is the first topic that they talked. Definition of social network sites is web-based service that construct a publish or semi-profile. Network can be use for interchangeable and relationship. Networking is not used because networking is focus on the relationship on initial step and often for stranger relationship.
The reason that make social network sites unique from another are allow users to connect each other and users can share something that they like into their own area. Users don't need to looking to meet the people but can communicate with other who already be the part of their social network.
After joining the SNSs, users need to have the profile which for answer the question, who is he? or she?. Profile is unique pages that can type oneself into being and can describe the interest, location, age etc. Profile on Friendster and Tribe.net can seen by everyone however, LinkedIn allow only friend to see it.
There are 2 principles for relationship in social network; bi-direction and one- direction. For bi-direction is for the friendship and one-direction is for fans and follower like subscribe.
Social network sites is different from another because their features,and users. There are many features that allow user to do on SNSs such as, photo sharing, video sharing,blogging, instant messaging and mobile supporting. Users are also various like different geographic, religion and sexual orientation.

History
Early year:
At 1997, the first SNSs was launched named sixDegrees.com. Users can create profile, create personal journals, having list of friend and AIM and ICQ buddy list which can chat by using username and password. SixDegrees allow users to put their school or college to find old friend or friend of friend. From six degrees theory said, we can find the stranger that very far from us by use friend of friend chain 6 times! we can call this small world. People can know each other by use this theory even through they have different geography.
At 2001, Ryze.com was launched. The propose of this site is for business network. Users have higher age, purpose change into: education, work, business, and politics; technology that use change into 3D, mobile and media instead text based.
The Rise (and Fall) of Friendster:
This site was launched in 2012. The purpose is for friend of friend meet. First purpose of friendster is allow user to view profile of people who is friend of friend over 4 degrees. There are fake account to be the celebrities so, Feckster happened. Feckster was poppular because people create more feck account and enjoyed it.
SNSs Hit the Mainstream
The another SNSs were launched. They were used to share media like Fickr for photo sharing, Last.FM for music online, Youtube for video sharing and user can personalize their page by HTML language.
A Global Phenomenon
Social Network have more impact for people daily life around the world in 2006 to 2007. The popular social network is instant message like Chinese QQ. Blogging service is the one feature that popular. Especially in USA, blogging like LiveJournal and Vox were very popular.
Expanding Niche Communities
In this period, Facebook was launched. Facebook was started design to use in college network only and require college e-mail address to create account. Then, facebook was become open for other member that not the student but it wasn't easy to access.
Most SNSs focus on growing exponential and have narrow audiences like SmallWorld and BeautifulPeople. Many coraporations invest time and money in creating, purchasing, promoting and advertising.

Previous Scholarship
The previous social network focus on impress the users by allow users to use the fake account and have friend finding feature for suggesting friend (suggest friend to friend). For example, friendster allow user to negotiate or interest the user to user their site.
Networks and network Structure is provide large behavior data.There are many users and social network can grow in many ways like flickr that include a friendship classifications.
Bridging Online and Offline Social Networks allow user to join other users by sharing or researching. Every social network sites have offline data like profile picture or personal information.
The first research about privacy is "How the children save in social network" in 2006. The second research is "Privacy Paradox" which is about learning thing that human want to hide. At 2007, phishing was happened. This word is like fishing which is stolen the personal information.
Conclusion
Social Network should have 3 functions;
- Profile: This feature is for identifying users
- Friend List: The users that you can communicate with them
- Travel and Branch: You can post something to friend profile
There are key features;
- User Profile: to identify user
- Communication: to comment or have interact with people or personal message
- Privacy: users can manage content by their own
- Relationship: users can interact with friends and make friend with stranger.
