Lecture 4: Wikinomics

Wikinomics is the combination between wiki and economics. Wiki is the web site that allow users to collaborate. Wikinomics was defined by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams who are the author of Wikinomics: How mass Collabaration Changes Everything which was published in December 2006.

They talked about how companies successful by using mass collaboration and open-source technology in the 21st century. In this book, there are 4 principles which are the central concept of wikinomics. These 4 concept are important reason for CEO's decision in the enterprise.

Openness: They believe that open standard and content such as,

financial, attitude and idea will be lead into the good idea and outsource which can solve the problem that human resource in the company cannot do. Trends of business is developed by using mass collaboration to solve the problem in their organization. The using mass collaboration can do by rewarding when there are someone can give the best idea to companies.

Peering : Linux is the best example of peering. There are more using the mass collaboration. The hierarchy model wan't be popular but collaborative model will be more popular. This model will focus on the wisdom more than anything else.

Sharing: The owner must allow other to see the product, the property that about their own knowledge or scientific knowledge. For example, Don's neighbor who is the owner of gold mine. However, his company cannot find any gold in the mine. He decided to share his geological data and set the reward for the best idea that suggest him how to find the gold. Finally, he didn't down his mine and can find the way to find gold. His market share become $90 million to $10 billion.

Acting Global: This principle is about the globalization and ignoring the physical and geographical boundaries. It can use in the companies and individual.

This place is for sharing idea and talent. It use Crowdsourcing to solve the problems and unsolved research by linking expert. The Innocentive company :which is the open innovation company and give the reward to someone who can find the best way to solve the problem; will be collect the problem and conclude the ideas.

Prosumers

Prosumers can be the consumer and producer. Inthe wikinomics book talked about prosumer by example of the discussion of social video game Second life. Usera can be both, consumer and producer. We call this phenomenon is Prosumer.

Wiki workspace

The example of wiki workspace are corporate blog, Google Docs, SocialText, Tagging and Micro blogging like twitter.

However, wikinomics cannot be happen soon because there are many huge factors. Human, economics and history are the factors for happening of wikinomics. First, web must be developed and is not the easy thing to do. we should change HTML base to XML based in Web 2.0. Next is human factors, the generation was changed. the baby boom is the first generation that need to change the way of thinking. This generation has different way of thinking and behave, In the other hand, this generation is the biggest generation in the workforce in marketplace. Wikinomics will be happen soon because it need the time to solve the factors problems.
