       Lecture 3: Usability Engineering

and Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the new trend market. The concept of web 2.0 was created in the conference between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. It's the new generation of world wide web, which is allow users to write and read web content. There are changing from web 1.0 to be more interactive with users. Users can only read web content, we call this way 'passive' in web 1.0 but web 2.0 is different. Users can edit, share or comment. Social network sites change into blogging instead personal website and page view to cost per click.

Web 2.0 includes social network sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites. Users can create their own sites or web platform by their own. Users have more freedom to read and write in their own way however, there are lot of data increase in the internet. There are spam and trolling which are the incorrect information. Spam always knows in e-mail spam which is make user annoyed. It's always be in advertising and pop-up for user. Trolling is always happened in the web communities, chat rooms or blog. Trolling message will be given the wrong information and make the web content to emotional. Other users who don't know the truth will think that trolling message is true and try to defense the web content. There are lots of data in web 2.0 so, users must be read and write the information carefully. They should check the correctness before fetching data to use in their own.

What's web 2.0?

This video shows the different between web 1.0 and 2.0  with animation. My classmate found and shared it on facebook.

This can explain what's web 2.0 is too! In web 1.0, users can only see what is the web content like receiving information only but in web 2.0 user can interact with each others. This video is very easy to understand and I hope you will enjoy with its sound.

Pip pip pip... :-)

Web 2.0 use client-side technologies included Ajex and javaScript frameworks to upload and download data from web sever to page load. Ajax and JavaScript are the helper connection between server and client by use formatted in XML of JSON. There are lot of technologies use behind the web 2.0 and the producer must choose to use the right technology such as HTML5 is used instead Adobe flash. However, web 2.0 also use same technology as web 1.0 in server side.

Web 2.0 can describes concept into 3 parts, Rich Internet application (RIA), Web-oriented architecture (WOA) and Social Web.

Rich Internet application (RIA) : RIA is web application based on browser. Users need to install software framework before launching application which can download, updates and executes. There are 3 common platform which is Adobe Flash, JavaFX and Microsoft Silverlight.

Web-oriented architecture (WOA) : This software architecture style extend service-oriented architecture(SOA). WOA is web-based application and smaller than SOA. The purpose of SOA is to maximize the browser and server interactions by usin REST and POX technologies.

Social Web : This topic talk about how web 2.0 interact with user. Web 2.0 provides the information storage to users and creation which can't do in web 1.0. There are features that Andrew McAfee talk about: search, link, authoring, tag, extension and signal.

Search        : Finding the information by using keyword for searching.

Links            : Information connect together into the useful information.

Authoring  : Users can update and edit in group work.

Tags             : Short word-usually one word for categorize.

Extensions : Software that make platform for application such as, Adobe reader, Adobe Flash player etc.

Signals       : Use for notify users in case of content changing.

What's usability Engineering?

Usability Engineering is the field that related to human-computer interaction. Usability Engineering is making human-computer interfaces that can give user friendliness and high usability. Users must be satisfy by using interfaces and have positive opinion. This field must improve usability of software graphic interface(GUIs) or any user interfaces. There are many filed that related to improve usability of interfaces such as psychology, human factors and cognitive. Nowadays, usability engineering focus on improve usability and less on design for any prototypes.

Goal of usability :
1. Effective to use
2. Efficient to use
3. Safe to use
4. Have good utility
5. Easy to learn
6. Easy to remember how to use

Goal of user experience :
1. Satisfying
2. Fun and Enjoyable
3. Entertainment
4. Helpful
5. Motivating
6. Emotional Fulfilling

In the real world, user experience goal and usability goal can't go together well so, we should have the measurement to see how good of usability.

There are 4 cores of evaluation:

        1. Quick and Dirty : Web designer will get the feedback from users or HCI consultant to check their idae. This way will focus on the speed more than detail of document. This evaluation is popular for web design.

        2. Usability Testing : This evaluations lab based, using user performing real tasks and recording time to measure it.

        3. Field Studies : This evaluation done in the user natural setting. The purpose of this evaluation is determine what user do and see any factor that effect to device or system. Field test usually use for testing new product and determine the requirement of design.

        4. Heuristic or predictive evaluation : This evaluation will provide the framework for heuristic and use to predict usability problems
